Temperature indicator stickers have become a more common inclusion in research-compound shipments over the past year. We ran a small, informal comparison of several indicator types under controlled warming conditions.

What These Stickers Are Actually Built to Do

Most indicators are simple threshold indicators: they trigger an irreversible color change once a specific temperature is exceeded, regardless of how long the exposure lasted.

“Think of it as a smoke detector, not a thermometer. It tells you something crossed a line — not how bad it got.”

What We Found Testing a Few Common Types

Threshold accuracy varied — some triggered close to their labeled temperature, others several degrees off, one didn’t reliably trigger at all within our test window.

What a Sticker Can and Can’t Tell a Buyer

A clean indicator is reasonably good evidence a shipment didn’t experience a severe excursion. Neither result substitutes for a seller who actually validates their packaging.
